‘Hamilton’ set for theatrical release in September

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical Hamilton is headed to the big screen. Disney has announced that the filmed version of the original Broadway production will be released in U.S. theaters starting September 5, just after Labor Day.

The release comes more than five years after Disney originally acquired the rights for \$75 million with plans for a 2021 theatrical run. The pandemic disrupted those plans, and the musical instead premiered on Disney+ in July 2020, where it became a streaming sensation and earned two Emmy Awards.

Now, audiences will have the chance to experience Hamilton as it was performed live at the Richard Rodgers Theatre during its groundbreaking first year on Broadway. The filmed version stars the original cast, including Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, and Phillipa Soo.

Directed by Thomas Kail, the film aims to recreate the immersive theater experience for moviegoers. The production, inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, combines hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes to tell the story of America’s founding through a modern lens.

International theatrical release dates include Canada and Puerto Rico on September 5, the UK and Ireland on September 26, and Australia and New Zealand on November 13.

Hamilton originally opened on Broadway in 2015 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, earning 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and setting box office records across multiple cities, including a $400 million run in Chicago.

The film’s release will coincide with the launch of New Line’s The Conjuring: Last Rites, setting up a varied box office weekend.
