The Hanover Area Historical Society is pleased to announce the grand opening of the Hormel History and Research Center, now located within Guthrie Memorial Library. The center will serve as the new home for the Yelland Research Library and Archives.
The grand opening will feature two significant events:
● Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Friday, September 27 at 11 a.m., where donors, community leaders, and volunteers will gather to celebrate the official opening of the new space.
● Public Grand Opening: Saturday, September 28, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 pm, inviting the public to explore the newly renovated research center and archival collections.
This move marks a major milestone in the Hanover Area Historical Society’s efforts to preserve and make Hanover’s history more accessible to the public. The research center is named in recognition of Terry and Monna Hormel, who generously donated $500,000 to enhance public access to the society’s books, photos, documents and historical materials. The Hormel History and Research Center will also house the genealogical collections donated from Hanover Borough’s Pennsylvania Room, allowing the community to delve deeper into local heritage.
“We are thrilled to open the doors of the Hormel History and Research Center to our community,” said Bea Haskins, President of the Hanover Area Historical Society. “Our volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly to prepare this new space as a valuable resource for Hanover’s residents and historians alike, and we look forward to celebrating this exciting milestone with everyone.”
At the public grand opening on September 28, families, historians, and local residents are invited to tour the new home of the Yelland Research and Library Archives, the Society’s Office, the Photo Department, and the Pennsylvania Room Collections. Guided tours will be available to showcase all historical collections housed in the center.
The establishment of the Hormel History and Research Center represents the Hanover Area Historical Society’s continued dedication to public engagement and the preservation of Hanover’s history for future generations.
