Healthy Adams County fall hiking schedule update

Healthy Adams County’s Physical Fitness Task Force is reminding walkers and hikers of the final three events on its fall schedule, with changing late-November weather playing a key role. Organizers note that the forecast for Sunday, Nov. 30, calls for cold, rainy conditions. The hike will proceed in a light mist but will be canceled if a soaking rain develops. Participants are encouraged to check the forecast or visit the group’s Facebook page before heading out.

The season continues Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Pine Grove Furnace State Park with a 1 p.m. walk led by Betsy Meyer. Participants should meet by the pavilion behind the furnace and park office at 1100 Pine Grove Furnace Road. The route follows a paved and firm gravel surface from the furnace to Laurel Lake and back, for a total of 4 miles. An early turnaround option shortens the distance to 2 miles, making the outing accessible to a range of abilities.

A more challenging hike follows on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m. at Indian Lookout near St. Mary’s Cemetery in Emmitsburg, Md. Hikers will take U.S. 15 south, turning onto Motter Road, then St. Anthony’s Road, and finally Grotto Road to reach the large parking lot near the cemetery. Organizers advise not driving all the way to the grotto itself.

This 2.5-mile hike begins with steep hills and rocky terrain, with the first 0.2 miles considered the most difficult. Those who prefer an easier option may enjoy the roughly one-mile walk through the Grotto area. After the first half-mile, the trail levels off and eventually offers broad views of Gettysburg from the turnaround point at Indian Lookout. A walking stick or binoculars may be helpful on the route. The hike is rated moderate to strenuous and will be led by Marty Qually, with Rayna serving as sweep.
