Healthy Adams County launches summer hikes to promote fitness and community

Healthy Adams County’s Physical Fitness Task Force invites residents to explore area trails this summer as part of its guided 2025 Summer Fitness Hikes. The hikes are open to all skill levels, though participants are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring water, and be prepared for uneven or muddy trails. Walks proceed rain or shine, except during severe weather.

Today, June 30, at 9:00 AM, the group will meet at Pine Grove Furnace State Park’s Fuller Lake Lot for a 3.5-mile hike on the Kopenhaver and Mountain Creek Trails. This outing features moderate elevation gain. Ed Riggs leads, with Rayna sweeping.

Monday, July 7, at 9:00 AM, brings a 3.6-mile easy to moderate walk along Codorus State Park’s Horse Trails, circling part of the lake and wooded areas. Ed Riggs and Rayna will guide hikers.

On Saturday, July 12, at 10:00 AM, hikers will gather at Long Pine Run Reservoir for a 3-mile scenic outing on the Beaver Trail, featuring peaceful views along the water’s edge. Marty Qually leads with Rayna sweeping.

Saturday, July 19, at 9:00 AM, offers two options at Caledonia State Park: an easy 2.3-mile Ramble Trail or a more strenuous 2.5-mile A/T and 3 Valley Trails loop with significant elevation changes. Betsy and Eric Meyer lead.

Saturday, July 26, at 9:00 AM, participants return to Strawberry Hill for a 3.2-mile Swamp Creek Trail hike, featuring stream crossings and rocky terrain. Tom Kiniry and Sherri will guide the group.

On Saturday, August 9, at 10:00 a.m., the 1.5-mile Quarry and Nature Trails hike highlights local geology. Marty Qually leads, Sherri sweeps.

Wednesday, August 13, at 9:00 AM, a challenging 6-mile Traverse Extended Loop and Moss Trails hike departs from Route 233. The route includes steep climbs and creek crossings. Betsy and Eric Meyer will lead, with Carol serving as the sweep.

Finally, on Thursday, August 21, at 9:00 a.m., the series concludes with a 5.5-mile Green Trail hike at Strawberry Hill. Expect ups, downs, and wildlife viewing. Tom Kiniry leads, Anne sweeps.
