Help Fight Hunger in Schools

The School Nutrition Association of Pennsylvania (SNAPA) invites you to a legislative luncheon and kids’ news conference on Wednesday, May 8 at the Capitol Building in Harrisburg to promote universal school meals in Pennsylvania.

The schedule of events:

At 11 a.m. in Room 60 EW (immediately next to the Capitol cafeteria), SNAPA and its partners will treat lawmakers to a “school lunch” supplied by a local school district to help them understand the importance of connecting kids to healthy foods to increase their ability to learn and succeed.

Immediately after lunch, at 1:30 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda, we will gather with students to ask the administration and General Assembly to expand the state’s existing no-cost school breakfast program to include lunch for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

School meals are as essential to the education process as technology, transportation, and textbooks. Right now, Pennsylvania currently provides no-cost school breakfast to all students, but not so with lunches, leaving many students to fend for themselves.

According to statewide polling, eight in 10 voters support expanding no-cost school breakfast to include lunch in K-12. In other words: Universal school meals unite nearly everyone – Pennsylvanians of all ages and political persuasions, in all parts of the state.

As they continue their work on a final state spending plan, we are encouraging lawmakers to commit funds for universal school meals in the state’s 2024-25 budget.

We hope you can join us at this event in Harrisburg. If you plan on attending, we ask that you please fill out this RSVP form and release form. If you can’t make it but still want to help, let us know how by showing your support. Thank you!
