Gettysburg National Military Park has recently announced an exciting opportunity for history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Starting May 24, 2024, the Michael Bushman and John Slyder homes, both significant sites from the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, will be available for public overnight accommodations. This initiative is part of a three-year pilot program aimed at providing a unique and immersive historical experience while supporting the maintenance and repair of the park’s historic structures.
The Bushman farm used as a staging ground by Confederate General John Bell Hood, and the Slyder farm, a strategic defensive position for Union sharpshooters, both offer guests a direct connection to the battle’s events. Superintendent Kristina Heister has emphasized the program’s potential to enhance visitor engagement, noting that the Bushman house was previously a popular rental property.

Both homes have been updated for comfort without compromising their historic integrity. They feature modern kitchens equipped with appliances and utensils, central heating and air conditioning, and essential amenities including bed linens and towels. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov, and visitors must complete a short-term lease agreement to finalize their stay.
In addition to the unique lodging experience, Gettysburg National Military Park encourages guests to explore the full range of attractions the area has to offer. The park provides 3D and 360-degree tours online, and additional reservations for museum visits and battlefield tours can be arranged through the Gettysburg Foundation. This initiative not only enriches the visitor experience but also plays a crucial role in the preservation of America’s historical heritage.
