Ice Cream Walk returns Aug. 18; Healthy Adams County promotes summer walking events

Ice cream lovers will once again have a chance to sample some of Gettysburg’s favorite frozen treats while supporting community wellness during the Eighth Annual Ice Cream Walk on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Sponsored by the Physical Fitness Task Force of Healthy Adams County, the popular fundraiser allows participants to enjoy five small 1.5-ounce ice cream cones for $10 by visiting any five participating locations during each shop’s regular business hours.

Tickets are available in advance at Mr. G’s Gift Shop.

Participating businesses include Antietam Dairy, Cone Sweet Cone, Friendly’s, Gettysburg Chocolate Market, Kilwins Chocolate & Ice Cream, Lulu’s Finest Ice Cream, Mr. G’s Ice Cream and Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard. Participants may choose any five of the eight locations to redeem their cones.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Physical Fitness Task Force, which promotes year-round opportunities for residents to stay active through free community walks and hikes throughout Adams County and the surrounding region.

The summer walking schedule includes a variety of outings designed for different ability levels.

On Saturday, July 18, participants can tackle the challenging 2.7-mile Charcoal Hearth Trail at Caledonia State Park. Beginning at 9 a.m., the strenuous hike climbs Graeffenburg Mountain before passing historic charcoal hearths, an old wagon road and a quiet stream near Furnace Dam. Patty Weaver will lead the hike.

A shorter, family-friendly option follows at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Carroll Commons, 5685 Fairfield Road in Carroll Valley. Walkers will enjoy a mostly flat, partially shaded one-mile trail with an optional half-mile extension to a fishing pond.

The Summer Garden Walk takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 29. The 1.5-mile stroll begins in the Howard Avenue parking lot behind Gettysburg Recreation Park and includes visits to six neighborhood gardens.

More experienced hikers can join a 5.2-mile trek through Michaux State Forest on Wednesday, Aug. 5. The route follows part of the Appalachian Trail before returning via Ridge Road.

The summer schedule concludes Wednesday, Aug. 19, with a hike through Catoctin Mountain Park. Participants will hike to scenic overlooks including Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock and Thurmont Vista. Organizers note the uphill portions are challenging but will include rest breaks.

Healthy Adams County’s Physical Fitness Task Force encourages residents of all ages to take part in the walks as a fun way to enjoy the outdoors, improve fitness and explore local parks and trails while connecting with others in the community.
