Rice

John Rice is running for a Gettysburg Borough Council seat from Ward 2.

I had a chance to talk with him about his candidacy.

You can listen to the interview here:

Rice is a life-long resident of Gettysburg who graduated from Gettysburg High School and received his B.A. from Yale University.

Now retired, he worked for 45 years as sales manager of Rice Fruit Company in Gardners.

Rice has been a member of the Gettysburg Borough Planning Commission and the Main Street Gettysburg Board of Directors since 2017.

Rice has been president and chairman of the U S Apple Association, the main trade association of the apple industry.  He has served twice as chairman of the PA Apple Marketing Board. He was awarded Apple Person of the Year and American Apple Grower of the Year as well as Outstanding Horticulturist of the Year.

Rice says he is running because he wants to give back to the community that has given so much to him and his family over the course of a lifetime.

In his interview Rice talks about ideas for historical preservation, economic growth, and his support for Main Street Gettysburg.

“I think I’ve been preparing for this job all of my life.  Now I have to ask my neighbors to hire me,” said Rice

“Gettysburg is the most important small town in America, which makes our local politics much more important, and more fun.”
