It was a busy year for the Littlestown Library

by Sharon Lentzer

The year 2024 was a very busy time for the Friends of the Littlestown Library. Now that the Christmas rush is over and we can relax, January is the month we had our belated Christmas party to thank all our members, spouses and friends who have helped to make our Friends group so successful throughout all our activities.

In February, we had a soup sale featuring chicken corn and beef vegetable soup that was pre-ordered at the Library.

In March, we were getting ready for our annual book sale.

In the middle of April, we had our book sale on Friday the 19th and Sat. the 20th at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Littlestown. The advertisement will be out as to the exact date of the 2025 book sale very shortly.

May took us to the Farmer’s Market in Gettysburg to give free children’s books to all the children there. It is always heartwarming to see how happy they are to pick out their favorite book. We will be there again in 2025.

June is when we got our thinking caps on to select a theme for our float for the Good Ole Days Parade, which is always held on the third Thursday of August. We Choose “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See”. It was beautiful, and we won second place!

At Good Ole Days, which is always the third Saturday of August in Crouse Park, we gave free books to the children who attended. They were thrilled to be able to pick out their own “special book” and the friends look forward to it each year. We will be doing it again in 2025.

September was the time to start planning for our next upcoming soup sale.

October was our second soup sale of the year. Our community used this sale to stock their freezers for the coming winter months. Many have come to depend on us for that very reason. We have always had a lot of fun doing these soup sales.

November saw us planning to set up a stand for Christmas on the Square in December. In early December, King Street was closed, and The Friends of the Littlestown Library set up a stand. We served Hot Chocolate, Hot Dogs, and Pizza. This was a big event for our town as we had Santa, the countdown for the tree lighting, plenty of games for the children and prizes given out, and area stores were open for all to enjoy.

Our monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 PM in the Littlestown Library meeting room. We always welcome anyone looking for a worthy cause to become involved, and we are a fun group, so join us anytime!
