Liam and Olivia have once again claimed the top spots as the most popular baby names in the United States, marking their sixth consecutive year at No. 1. The latest data released by the Social Security Administration shows that American parents continued to favor these names throughout 2024.
Emma and Noah held steady in second place for girls and boys, respectively, also for the sixth straight year. Rounding out the top five for boys were Oliver, Theodore, and James, while Amelia, Charlotte, and Mia followed Olivia and Emma for girls.
The rest of the top 10 included Henry, Mateo, Elijah, Lucas, and William for boys, and Sophia, Isabella, Evelyn, Ava, and Sofia for girls. The list suggests a continued preference for classic and timeless names, many with historical or literary resonance.
Despite the enduring popularity of these names, naming trends are always evolving. A glance at the past reveals how much can change: Mary, once the most common name for baby girls in the 1940s, has now slipped to 132nd place. Meanwhile, once-popular boys’ names like Gary, Jerry, and Larry have all but vanished from the top rankings.
