Major power reliability project underway in Adams County

A new electric reliability project is moving forward in Adams County, aiming to strengthen service for nearly 2,300 customers, including Hanover Hospital, Alpha Fire Company, and WellSpan Health.

The East Germantown-Germantown Reliability Project, led by Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission (MAIT), a FirstEnergy company, involves the construction of a new substation and a 115-kilovolt transmission line. The work is intended to improve service reliability and prepare for growth in the region. Service in the area is provided by FirstEnergy’s Pennsylvania Electric Company, known locally as Met-Ed.

The East Germantown Substation is expected to be in service by March 2026. It will connect with the existing Germantown Substation through a high-voltage power line supported mostly by wood poles, with steel structures used where necessary.

According to the company, once completed, the project will provide a second source of electricity, expand switching options, and improve operational flexibility. That is expected to make outage restoration faster and reduce both the frequency and duration of service interruptions, particularly during storms or times of high demand.

The transmission line route was designed to limit impacts on environmentally sensitive areas, property owners, and nearby communities. Vegetation restoration and environmental work will continue into 2026 as part of the final stages.

The Adams County upgrades are part of “Energize365,” FirstEnergy’s \$28 billion grid modernization plan scheduled to run from 2025 through 2029. The initiative focuses on building a more resilient system to keep pace with customer needs.

Met-Ed serves about 592,000 customers across 3,300 square miles in eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania.
