Mark Mellon Keeps the YWCA Aquatics Department Afloat

Since becoming Aquatics Director at the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County in December, Mark Mellon has been busy.

“I’m a jack of all trades. I do everything, including scheduling, teaching, and maintenance. I’m getting everything up to speed,” said Mellon.

Mellon said the aquatics program includes something for all ages, from preschool to senior citizens. There are private and group lessons, water fitness classes, lap swimming, and more.

“We’ve recently added Saturday lessons,” said Mellon. “They are more convenient for parents, and we’ve added more classes,” he said.

The Y also offers the Y Sharks swim team, for swimmers ages 8-18. “We’ve had about 60 or 70 signups this year. A lot of the kids are pretty serious,”, said Mellon.

“The pool has a very nice pump and filter system that helps keep the water balanced. I keep the chemicals on the lower side for better water quality. I check the water three times a day. It really does make a difference,” said Mellon.

Mellon received a degree in Information Technology from Hagerstown Community College, but has found a career in aquatics. “I’ve been in aquatics since I was 15. It’s always been good work. I like the water and I stuck with it,” said Mellon.
