May 1-3 – Sally Struthers Visits Totem Pole @ Totem Pole Playhouse     Hosted by John Putch, a Totem Pole favorite, the Emmy-Award-winning actress Sally Struthers joins him onstage for an intimate conversation that reflects on her remarkable career from “All in the Family” to “Gilmore Girls” – sharing personal stories, laughter, and behind-the-scenes memories. Their conversation will be followed by an audience Q and A.  Tickets are $33-$42.  www.totempoleplayhouse.org

May 1 from 5 – 7 pm – Art Exhibition and Reception @ Adams County Arts Council    Artists exhibiting this month include students from Gettysburg Area High School, Mary Jane Schnurer and Nancy Rehm. May 1 – 17 – Peter Pan, Jr. @ Gettysburg Community Theatre Based on the classic children’s novel, Peter Pan, Jr.  this musical transports audiences to a place where imaginations run wild and dreams take flight…Neverland! May 1 at 7 pm – Poetry First Friday @ Ragged Edge Coffeehouse   It’s a First Friday Double Poetry Feature on May Day with the wonderful combination of Jerry Wemple and Marjorie Maddox, both professors at Commonwealth University in Bloomsburg. Program begins with an open mic followed by readings from the featured poets. Coffee, tea, and goodies are available downstairs. May 7 at 7:30 pm – Felix Hell, Organist @ United Lutheran Seminary Church      This special concert will be part of the celebration of the Seminary’s 200th birthday. Hell, who is the seminary’s Distinguished Visiting Artist, will make the rafters ring on his favorite instrument – the chapel’s Mighty Andover. May 7-29 from 1-5 pm – Frak-turing the Family: The Printed Art of the Pennsylvania Germans @ Gettysburg College Musselman Library Special Collections   The exhibit explores the folk-art tradition of Fraktur, a distinctive printed art form developed by Pennsylvania-German communities. Fraktur prints were often used to document important life events like births and baptism and are known for their sharp gothic lettering, bright colors, and decorative motifs such as birds, hearts, and Biblical symbols. May 12 at 7:30 pm – Neave Trio (violin, cello, piano) @ St. James Lutheran Church     A trio of nations come together in this vibrant and highly talented ensemble, featuring American violinist Anna Williams, Russian cellist Mikhail Veselov, and Japanese pianist Eri Nakamura. This Grammy-nominated trio is known for its fiery connection, exuberance, and a shared sense of storytelling that reflects the deep human bonds at the core of chamber music. May 14-17 – 90th Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival @ Granite Hill Camping Resort    This festival, founded in 1979, has grown into one of the most respected and longest-running bluegrass events in the country. Headliners include Dan Tyminski, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Steep Canyon Rangers, The Seldom Scene plus many more. May 24 at 3 pm – Gettysburg Choral Society “Celebrate America” @ United Lutheran Seminary Chapel  Under the direction of John McKay, The Gettysburg Choral Society will present “Celebrate America,” a concert in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The program will feature a diverse selection of patriotic and sacred choral works spanning from the Revolutionary War era to the present, including William Billings’ “Chester”, Virgil Thomson’s “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need”, and Mark Hayes’ “The Battle Hym of the Republic, along with the chorus favorite “The Gettysburg Address”.  Admission is free and open to the public.  www.gettysburgchoralsociety.org

May 29 – June 13 – A Night with Janis Joplin @ Totem Pole Playhouse     The smash Broadway musical of the queen of rock and roll will have you re-living such favorites as “Piece of My Heart”, and “Me and Bobby McGee” during this powerhouse tribute.  Tickets range from $61 – $71.  www.totempoleplayhouse.org

May 31 at 4 pm – Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra @ United Lutheran Seminary Church         The Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Conductor Ryan Kozak, begins the Beethoven Project! Over the next several years, it will perform all nine symphonies. This concert begins with Beethoven’s 4th and 7th Symphonies. Gail Jones

Gail Jones has enjoyed a twenty-five-year career as a music educator in Pennsylvania and Maryland public schools as well as teaching music education methods at Gettysburg College for over a decade. She has also served as a guest conductor, French horn player, and private music instructor. Gail has a deep appreciation for live music performances of all genres and encourages Adams County residents to attend the many concerts offered in our community.
