Mission of Mercy will host an open house tomorrow, Friday, May 15, at the Gettysburg American Legion to introduce a new initiative providing free dental care to veterans in Adams County.
The event will run from noon to 2 p.m. at the American Legion, located at 528 E. Middle Street in Gettysburg. Community members will have the opportunity to tour Mission of Mercy’s mobile medical and dental clinics, meet staff members, and learn more about the expanded program scheduled to begin in June.
Mission of Mercy officials said the new initiative is designed to assist veterans who lack access to dental care by bringing free services directly to a location where many veterans already receive support and resources.
The dental clinic will operate one Friday each month at the American Legion and will provide services including cleanings, fillings and extractions.
The Gettysburg expansion builds on a similar veterans dental program launched in June 2025 in partnership with Platoon22. According to Mission of Mercy, that program has already provided 51 fillings or extractions and 23 cleanings for 74 veterans.
Mission of Mercy credited local volunteers, including Dr. Scott Reffner and his team from Above and Beyond Family Dentistry of Gettysburg, for helping launch the Adams County effort.
Organizers are also seeking additional volunteer dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants to support the monthly clinic. The nonprofit said malpractice insurance will be provided for volunteers participating in the program.
Light refreshments will be available during Friday’s open house, and organizers are encouraging residents and healthcare professionals interested in supporting the initiative to attend.
Mission of Mercy has provided free healthcare services for more than 30 years through mobile medical and dental clinics serving communities in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The organization assists uninsured and underinsured patients by offering physician visits, dental care and medications through traveling clinics designed to reduce financial barriers to healthcare.
