The Sunderman Conservatory of Music will open its concert season this Friday, Sept. 18, with “Mosaic: A Celebration of Art in Music” at Gettysburg’s Majestic Theater.
The 8 p.m. program will feature the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony, conducted by Russell McCutcheon, and the Gettysburg College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Amanda Heim.
Built around music inspired by visual art, the concert will include works by Norman Dello Joio, Samuel Hazo, Duke Ellington and Toshiko Akiyoshi.
The Wind Symphony is the conservatory’s premier wind and percussion ensemble. Composed of 40 to 50 musicians, the group performs contemporary wind literature and traditional band works in four major concerts each year.
The ensemble has toured Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., as well as China, Singapore, Germany, the Czech Republic and the Baltic states. It made its Kennedy Center debut in 2019 as the invited college and university ensemble for the Sousa Band Invitational.
The Gettysburg College Jazz Ensemble includes 16 to 19 students selected through auditions. The group studies and performs styles including swing, Latin, fusion, bop and selections from the American Songbook.
During its history, the jazz ensemble has performed in Europe and appeared with musicians including Carmen Bradford, Delfeayo Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Boston Brass and Chris Brubeck.
“Mosaic” will be the first performance of the season for both Gettysburg College ensembles.
Tickets are $5. Admission is free for those 18 and younger and for people with a Gettysburg College identification card.
