In a list of the most haunted houses in every state in the U.S., travel and adventure website thrillist.com has listed Gettysburg’s Farnsworth House as number one in the Commonwealth.
“The grim realities of the Civil War are felt throughout the small but historic Farnsworth House Inn,” says the site. “Built in 1810, the home housed Confederate sharpshooters during the Battle of Gettysburg, including one who is believed to have mistakenly shot the only civilian killed during the battle, and was used as a hospital to treat the wounded afterwards. The accidental victim’s spirit haunts the property along with the souls of dead soldiers.”
The Farnworth House, at 401 Baltimore St., is named after Brigadier General Elon John Farnsworth, who died in a Confederate charge following Pkckett’s charge on July 3, 1863.
