Mt. Tabor Hosts Memorial Day Weekend Service

Mt. Tabor’s annual Memorial Day observance took place on Friday, May 23, 2025, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a community parade. Fire companies from Bendersville, Biglerville, York Springs, and Mt. Holly participated, along with local Scout troops and community groups.

The event was organized by Cathleen Lerew. Wayne Galloway offered the invocation and benediction, and the Apple Core Band performed two patriotic selections.

Abby Orner, a sixth-grade student from Upper Adams Intermediate School, recited In Flanders Fields, and Mrs. Gerlitzki led the school’s chorus in a performance of You’re a Grand Old Flag. The American Legion ritual, including the Pledge of Allegiance and The Star-Spangled Banner, was led by Norma Calhoun and Commander Rick Pelc of Post 262, along with Chaplain Dennis Ever.

Upper Adams student Kash Brashear donned a Lincoln-style top hat to deliver the Gettysburg Address, bringing historical significance to the evening. Guest speaker Col. Jamie Giambrone, PMP, of the U.S. Army War College, offered reflections on service and sacrifice.

Colton Lerew read the names of local veterans during a solemn remembrance portion of the ceremony.

Following the program, attendees enjoyed pit barbecue chicken dinners provided by Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, available through presale tickets. Additional refreshments and treats were available for purchase at the event.

Organizers extended thanks to community supporters including Big Hill Ciderworks, Kime’s Cider Mill, Big Hill Kennel, Under The Horizon, Job’s Daughters, and Musical Eclipse.
