What we know today as NAMI (National Alliance On Mental Illness) York Adams Counties, PA, began as a local affiliate of NAMI Pennsylvania as Mental Illness Needs Devoted Support (MINDS) in 1984. The organization has undergone several name changes over the years as the terminology regarding mental health has evolved. The NAMI York County office was established when a full-time Executive Director began in 2007, and a part-time Program Specialist position was added in 2008. Through word-of-mouth efforts, billboard ads, and announcements in local papers, word spread about our support groups helping individuals and families living with mental illness. As a volunteer-based organization, NAMI York County increased programming to meet the needs of the community. In July 2015, NAMI York County became its own 501(c) (3) and opened a very small office located in the York County Economic Alliance building located in York, PA. This office served our needs until December 2021
