National Park Prepares for Hot, Dry Weather by Borrowing Brush Fire Engine

The Gettysburg National Military Park has borrowed a brush fire fighting apparatus from Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to be prepared in case of a brush fire in this hot and dry summer.

The fire apparatus is a Type 6 Wildland Fire engine with a Ford F550 engine and Brand FX body build up. The vehicle carries almost 320 gallons of water and has the capacity to go 4×4 off road.

“It has been awhile since we got significant rain. Grasses are drying out and grass thatch has no moisture left in it,” said park biologist Dafna Reiner.

Reiner said the winds on Saturday were expected to be light which meant any fire would likely not grow at a very rapid rate.
