Gettysburg Borough Council Considers Local Issues

At its meeting on June 10th, the Gettyburg Borough Council noted there will be a special zoning request meeting on June 24th. This meeting is open to the public.

Parking manager Becka Fissel said the borough is still in the process of collecting data about the use and effectiveness of different types of parking systems. Fissel said the kiosks on the square will stay in place until the trial period has ended, but she gave no indication of how long that will be.

City manager Chad Clabaugh reported the borough has begun to move construction ground fill into the rec park in accordance with a prior agreement with the Gettysburg Area Recreation Authority (GARA).

Council approved final contracts for the ongoing construction on East and West Broadway streets.

Councilman Strauss asked for clarification about how the proposed neighborhood improvement district (NID), which he said made the investment in the Broadway reconstruction worthwhile, would be operating once the construction is finished.

Strauss said he wanted to be “sure the NID was on track before we finish signing the contract.”

Borough solicitor Harold Eastman, Jr said he “anticipated that the formation of the NID would be forthcoming.”

Police chief Glenny said that the borough was sponsoring “buckle up” and speeding enforcement patrols, particularly on Buford Avenue. Glenny said there had also been a DUI enforcement detail at night over the Memorial Day weekend.

The borough also noted that there will be some further discussion regarding the changes in the truck ordinance in the borough. These changes, directed by the state, have allowed larger trucks to use the streets in Gettysburg.

Borough Manager Charles Gable said the borough had received a letter from PA transportation secretary Leslie Richards directing a meeting with the executive from District 8, Mr. Kaiser. The meeting will be held on August 5th at 10:30 a.m.

Councilman Strauss thanked the many people from the council and the community who helped develop and the 75th Annual D-Day celebration that was held in the square in May. Strauss said there would be many other related events going forward.

Main Street Gettysburg president and CEO Deb Adamik spoke to the council about the many approaches Main Street is taking to fund its big $11 million fundraising project and indicated the fundraising is going very well.
