Obituary: Anthony “Tony” Ten Barge

Anthony “Tony” Ten Barge, 75, late of Gettysburg, died from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease and Colon Cancer on March 4, 2026, with family in attendance.

Tony was born in Haubstadt, IN, and raised in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Morehead College with a degree in Finance and was active for several years with the alumni association. Tony was in the army during the Viet Nam era, serving for 6 years. During his business career he was Risk Manager for several private and public companies.

For both business and pleasure, he travelled the globe visiting Great Britain, Canada, China, Mexico, and Bermuda. He also visited many Civil War sites and re-enactments throughout the United States. However, his most favorite battlefields were those of Gettysburg.

He was an avid reader of current affairs and the American wars, especially World War II and the American Civil War, and Eisenhower. His lifelong ambition was to live in Gettysburg and own a bookstore, which he realized for more than 10 years as the owner of Battlefields and Beyond Bookstore in Gettysburg.

During his time in Gettysburg he served on the Adams Co. Library board, the Eisenhower Institute, was a member of the Civil War Preservation Trust and several other historical preservation societies. He was a volunteer leading tours at the Eisenhower Homestead. He also taught briefly at Gettysburg College before becoming ill.

He studied extensively the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. Sometimes kicking and grouching, he participated (on both sides) in several Civil War re-enactments. Regarding the battles of World War One, he could talk the hind leg off a mule with vignettes and minutia.

His favorite local hangouts were Little Round Top, the Eisenhower Society, and Gettysburg Eddies where “Diet Coke, a plain hamburger, and fries” were his staples. He never met a salad he couldn’t ignore, or a colonoscopy he couldn’t avoid.

Tony is survived by his son, Michael Ten Barge, two step granddaughters, Laney (Michael) Kegley and Chloe Sherbourne, all of Mansfield. Two sisters; Libby (Bob) Turner, of Cincinnati, OH, and Merrilee (Jeff) Brown of Jupiter FL. He also is survived by five nieces: Jessica, Ashley Catie, Emily, their husbands and children.

He is also survived by his ex-wife and caretaker of the past four years, Julie Reese DuVall of Mansfield Ohio and his best friend since second grade, Bill Amick of Howard Ohio.

Graveside services will be held May 30, 2026, at Mansfield (Ohio) Cemetery at 11 AM followed by an open house. There will be entertainment at the cemetery: Bagpipes will be involved.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Eisenhower Institute, Civil War Preservation Trust, Alzheimer Association or American Cancer Society…and get a colonoscopy while you’re at it.
