George Wayne Matthews, 58, of Littlestown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his home.
Born April 26, 1968, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the beloved son of George F. Matthews and the late Betty Lee (Trostle) Matthews.
George spent his early years in Baltimore and later resided in Westminster and Taneytown before making Littlestown his home. A proud graduate of Westminster Senior High School’s Class of 1986, he worked alongside his father for many years in the family business, Matthews Roofing. Known for his outgoing personality and quick wit, George had a gift for making people laugh and bringing joy to those around him. He enjoyed singing, playing the drums, strumming an air guitar, and spending time with family and friends.
A man of strong faith, George was baptized at Fuller Lake, PA. He enjoyed discussing his beliefs with anyone willing to listen. His faith was an important part of his life, and he remained steadfast and confident in his convictions.
George will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. As he often said, “’til the end,” and his family takes comfort in knowing they will one day be reunited with him in Heaven.
In addition to his father, George is survived by his stepmother, Barbara Matthews; his children, Amber Ballou and her husband, Justin Ballou, Anthony “AJ” Matthews, Tony Owens, and Joyanna Matthews; and his cherished grandchildren, Bryce, Camdyn, Kaedynce, Mia, Serenity, Eithen, and Jeremiah. He was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of another grandchild, Malia Owens, who is due in August.
In addition to his immediate family, George leaves behind a close-knit circle of siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who became family throughout his life.
There will be no public viewing. A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Littlestown. A public Celebration of Life will be announced and held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in George’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
