elen M. (Metzler) Shaffer, age 98 of Gettysburg, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on Monday, March 18, 2024 at SpiriTrust Lutheran Nursing Center in Gettysburg. She was born on October 18, 1925 in Martinsburg, PA on the family dairy farm, the daughter of the late Clarence B. & Margaret L. (Honsaker) Metzler. Her husband, Richard E. âDickâ Shaffer, to whom she shared 74 years of a loving and God centered marriage died in 2021. Helen was a very active member of the Bethel Mennonite Church in Gettysburg, where she sang in the choir, was a Bible School and Sunday School Teacher and former Sunday School Superintendent. She was the co-founder of the ladies prayer breakfast, attended on several occasions by former first lady Mamie Eisenhower. Helen was a member of the Church Women United. She was a dedicated homemaker and for twenty-five years worked as a sales associate at several downtown Gettysburg retail stores. Helen was very proud of the Metzler Pleasant View Dairy Farm which is still in operation today, run by the 6th generation of the Metzler family. Helen is survived by four daughters, Cheryl Mickley (Gary) of Gettysburg, Elaine Haydt (Glen) of Weatherford, TX, Colleen Simpson (Dean) of Orrtanna, PA and Joan McManness (Ed) of Lancaster, PA, nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her step-mother, Dorothy Metzler, a sister, Lois Unruh-Nye, two brothers, Paul H. and L. C. âRedâ Metzler and a half-brother, Richard Metzler. A Celebration of Life for Helen & Dick will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at the Bethel Mennonite Church, 2335 Biglerville Road, Gettysburg, PA with Pastors, Dale & Jennie Brown, officiating. A private viewing and interment will be held for the family with burial next to her beloved husband Dick in the Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. The family suggests memorials to the Adams Rescue Mission or Bethel Mennonite Church.
