Obituary: Jackie ‘Jack’ Chambers



Jackie (Jack) Willard Chambers, of Gettysburg, died at home on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born on October 10, 1936 in Hanover, PA, the son of the late Effie (Goodfellow) Chambers and Willard J. Chambers.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nancy Snyder Chambers and his stepdaughter, Heidi M. Sumser of Washington, DC. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Steven L. Snyder and his wife Alice, and his sister-in-law Diane M. Snyder, all of Littlestown.

After graduating from New Oxford High School, Jack served four years in the U.S. Air Force, including being stationed in Japan. After discharge, he was employed as an insurance investigator for Retail Credit Company in Hanover. Following this, he worked for 30 years at the North Gettysburg office of Adams County National Bank, now ACNB Bank, where he became a vice president. Jack was awarded several banking diplomas from the American Institute of Banking and taught lending courses for them.

Jack served as treasurer of the former Adams-York Family Planning and as president of the York-Adams Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He chaired numerous public speaking contests for the local AIB chapter and for the Gettysburg Optimist Club. He was president of the former Adams County Prison Advisory Committee and was also active in the PA Tourette Syndrome Alliance.

In his younger years, Jack was an avid bicyclist, completing several century rides. He was thrilled to have witnessed the finale of the 2000 Tour de France in Paris.
