Obituary: John L. Seilhamer, Jr.



John L. Seilhamer, Jr., 81, of Gettysburg, PA, died August 3, 2024, at the Gettysburg Hospital. He was born October 4, 1942, in Chambersburg, the son of the late J. LeRoy and Dorothy (Cool) Seilhamer.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judith S. “Judy” (Shreiner) Seilhamer and two children, Michael J. Seilhamer (Stacy) of Lutherville, MD, and Heather Seilhamer, of Annville, PA. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Lucas, Grace, & William Kreider and Kelsey & Gavin Seilhamer. John is also survived by his sister, Norma Jean Williams (Sam), of Chambersburg and his sister-in-law, Mary Jo Frey, of Fayetteville, PA.

Upon graduation from Chambersburg High School in 1960, John worked as a sheet metal mechanic before entering the United States Army in 1962. When discharged from the Army, he began working for United Telephone Company and moved to Gettysburg. After 34 years of service, John retired from Sprint in 1999, and devoted much of his time to his life-long hobby of building and flying radio-controlled giant scale aircraft.

John was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, where he served on Church Council, on property committee, and as an usher. He was a member of American Legion Post 202, Amvets Post 172, Adams County Fish & Game Association, and Blue Ridge Sportsman’s Association.

John loved and was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren, and cherished time spent with them. In addition, there has never been a dog John met that he did not like, currently Marley Blue.

A Memorial Service for John will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 10, 2024 at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York St., Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Andrew Geib officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the service Saturday morning at the church.
