Obituary: John S. Houston



John S Houston Sr, age 76, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 8th at his favorite place, Drummer Boy Campground in Gettysburg, PA. Born in Baltimore on May 5, 1947, John was the son of the late John E and Agnes (Harchenhorn) Houston. On September 11, 1971, he married his soulmate Linda Smelgus, with whom he shared a loving union of 52 years. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Houston. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his daughter, Lori Crocken; his sons John Jr and Paul Houston; his grandchildren Chucky, Tim, Kerri, Austin and Cam; his great-grandchildren Molly, Payton and Lillian. He also leaves his sisters Louise McClain and Joyce Gosnell; brother-in-law John Smelgus; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and in-laws.

He retired from General Motors at age 53 and soon after started a landscaping company, J&P Landscaping, which he was dedicated to until a few months ago. John was a kind, sweet, generous and loving man who was devoted to his wife and children. John was strong willed and believed in hard work in order to achieve his goals. He was very vocal and not afraid to share his thoughts with you. He was excellent at imparting words of life wisdom and went above and beyond to help those around him. John enjoyed bargain shopping and spending lots of time in grocery stores looking for the best deal. He also enjoyed long golf cart rides around the campground, watching the Orioles and Ravens games, cooking and had a natural gift, affection and affinity with dogs.
