Obituary: Kathleen G. Platzer

Kathleen Gertrude Platzer died peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 14. She was born in Cambridge, MA, in 1937 to Gertrude M. and J. Claude Shea. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold L. Platzer, who died in 2000; a brother, Joseph C. Shea, Jr., and a sister, Louise M. Lang.

Kathy is survived by her children: daughter Carolyn Faure (fiance Lonnie Prout) of St. Michaels, MD; daughter Nancy Vander Zwan of Perkasie, PA; son Gregory Platzer of Mechanicsburg, PA; three grandchildren: Jillian Vander Zwan, Amethyst Platzer, and Heather Platzer; two sisters: Virginia McDonald of Redmond WA, and Dr. Christine Conway of Oak Hill, VA; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Kathy was a graduate of Mt. Trinity Academy in Watertown, MA, and of The Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, MA.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, where she served as a Stephen Minister. She was a former tutor and trainer for the Adams County Literacy Council and a former board member of Dollars for Scholars and of Gettysburg Community Theater.

Kathy took great pleasure in spending time with her family and friends. She loved her adopted home, Gettysburg, and its history. She was deeply committed to the protection of animals and wildlife, particularly wolves. She enjoyed visiting the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania and had adopted several of the wolves in the sanctuary’s care.

Services will be held at 1:30 pm Thursday, August 21, at St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg PA, with a visitation at the church starting at noon. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that charitable contributions be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325; The Adams County Community Foundation,  25 S 4th Street Gettysburg, PA 17325; or to The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, PA 17543.The Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg is assisting the family with the arrangements.
