Obituary: Leroy Townsend

eroy Townsend, 74 gained his wings, unexpectedly the early morning of November 30th 2023. Leroy came to Pennsylvania in the late 1970’s as a fruit picker from Willacoochee Georgia. He then worked for BMY in York, PA for a number of years. After leaving there he went to R.H. Sheppard in Hanover, PA, and then to NVR in Thurmont, MD. Throughout the rest of his years, he did odd jobs, one being a popular bartender at various locations in Gettysburg. His most recent job of enjoyment was helping run Uncle Moe’s Soul Food where he did everything from hauling the trailer, cleaning, cooking and running all around; anything to help make it a success! Leroy loved to help people any way he could. You could always depend on him, whether it was 10 degrees outside and your car wouldn’t start, or it being 100 degrees working in Uncle Moe’s trailer. He loved to cook for others, with his specialty being smothered pork chops in gravy. He loved when his grandchildren would visit. He always had them laughing. Leroy leaves his children to mourn, Leroy, Jr of Florida, Chad of Dillsburg and Lindsay of Atlanta Ga. His bonus daughters that he raised as his own, Stephanie, Lisa and Tara; and E. “Moses” he treated as his very own son, seventeen grandchildren, and two great granddaughters. Surviving sisters, Rose Murray, Dr. Corine Young, Mary Townsend, Wylene Moore, Anna Ruth Mathis, Andrea Perry and Ruthellen Hadley. Surviving brothers: Lamar and Jerry Hadley, last living uncle: Partry Lee White and his significant other, Toni Braxton. He was predeceased by his parents Lizze Mae and John Wesley Townsend, a son Christopher L. Thomas, sisters, Anna Rebecca and Marie, brothers, Dr. John Townsend, Jr., Walter Lee Townsend, John Wesley Townsend III, Johnny Lee Townsend, Frank and James Hadley and James Mathis. We would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Shuba for her care and compassion for Leroy over the years. She went well beyond her duty to tend to him. Interment and a graveside committal service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg. A repast will follow the service.
