Obituary: Margaret Blanchard Curtis

Margaret H. Blanchard Curtis, 94, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at SpiriTrust in Gettysburg, PA.

She was born May 1, 1931, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Ernest and Harriet McCurdy Blanchard. Her husband, Dr. Robert E. Curtis, died in 2000.

Mrs. Curtis was an active member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, involved with various committees. She graduated from Ramsey High School and Gettysburg College. Following graduation from Gettysburg College, she returned to Ramsey, New Jersey, for a 32-year career as a Development Microbiologist with Lederle Laboratories, which later became Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. She specialized in developing new tests for new products and vitamins. In 1984, she married Dr. Robert E. Curtis and moved to Gettysburg.

Margaret was a member of the Board of Fellows at Gettysburg College from 1973 until her appointment as a Trustee at her Alma mater, Gettysburg College from 1973 until 1991, and later as Trustee Emeritus. At her 45th college Reunion, she was awarded the Meritorious Service Award from the Alumni Association.

Margaret was also very involved with many community organizations, she volunteered at the Friends of the Library Store, was active in the YWCA where she taught an aerobics class for 25 years.

Mrs. Curtis is survived by three step-sons; Allan E. Curtis and his wife Hazel of Chittenango, NY, Garry R. Curtis and his wife Lisa of England, William B. Curtis and his wife Mary Ellen of Towson, MD, four step-grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, four step great great grandchildren brothers and sisters; David Blanchard of Hingham MA, Jane Shapley of Malahat, BC, Irene Blanchard of LaConner, WA. She was predeceased by a sister, Ann McCurdy Blanchard Bovbjerg.

A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Gettysburg College, 300 North Washington Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325 or Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
