Obituary: Nancy C. Locher

Nancy Cohen Locher, 96, of Gettysburg, PA, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 28, in her home surrounded by family. In no particular order, Nancy was an avid birder and traveler; a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend; and a stickler for proper behavior at the dinner table.

Nancy was born in Staunton, Virginia in 1930. She earned degrees from Mary Baldwin University (BA) and the University of North Carolina (MA). She worked briefly at Hood College, then married Jack Snowden Locher (deceased) and took a position at Gettysburg College. Nancy started her Gettysburg career teaching psychology (and using her children as classroom demonstrations), and retired as a dean who counselled students.

Nancy leaves behind two children (Michael and Mira), their spouses (Meredith and Kuma), two grandchildren (Alexander and Zachary), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. One of her great joys was when Alex, a Gettysburg College student, visited her for brunch, not least because Alex could reach things on the top shelf.

A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, April 25, at Hauser Hill Event Center (410 Cashtown Road, Biglerville) starting at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a small donation to the South Mountain Audubon Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, or a conservation organization of your choice would be appreciated.
