Obituary: Rita Horne

Rita Horne, 83, of Gettysburg, PA, passed away Saturday morning, August 30, 2025, at her

home in Gettysburg.

Born June 21, 1942, in Hobbs, New Mexico, she was the daughter of the late Cranfell and

Louella Fowler. She was the wife of James E. Horne, of Gettysburg to whom she was

married to for 61 years.

Rita was preceded in death by her mother, Louella Fowler, her siste,r Madeline Fowler, her

brother Richard Fowler and her grandson Riley James Horne.

Rita was a gifted person with many talents and skills, to name a few, she was a painter,

baker, horticulturist, builder, landscaper, ceramic artist, stained glass artist, seamstress, and

needle point of any kind.

Rita was active in the church in many ways; she was actively involved in the seniors,

women’s activities and home bible studies.

Rita was a dedicated wife and mother as the family traveled around the world with the U.S.

Navy. Her loving touch on every new duty station made for a loving and peaceful home.

Rita often shared her story of how God restored her to full health after a bad fall in 2020.

She never met a stranger, her heart was always open to encourage and lift up anyone God

brought across her path.

In addition to her husband, Rita is survived by her three children, J. Slade Horne and wife

Michelle, of Spotsylvainia, VA, Tracy M. (Horne) Mosher and husband Russ, of Gettysburg,

April K. (Horne) Deckert and husband Chad, of Gettysburg, a brother Ross Fowler and

wife Roberta of Las Vega,s NV, a sister Susan Boxwell, and husband Dan of Cedar Rapids,

IA, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service for Rita will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 5, 2025, at Heritage

Assembly of God, 1575 Chambersburg Rd., Gettysburg, PA, with Pastor Todd McCauslin

officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.

The following day, September 6, at 9:30 AM at the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA

There will be a graveside service. Anyone who would like to attend is welcome.

The Monahan Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements and online

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society

Society at 1 (800) 227-2345 in memory of Rita Horne.
