Robert (Bob) N. Britcher died July 13, 2026, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he was a longtime resident.

He was born in 1947 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Jacob C. and Kathryn L. (Fissel) Britcher. In 1964, he graduated from Gettysburg High School, where he played baseball, basketball, and golf. As a member of St. James Lutheran Church, he sang in the choir for ten years.

In 1968, he graduated from Gettysburg College with a BA in Chemistry. During that time he served as president of Sigma Chi and played intercollegiate golf, a sport he continued to enjoy for many years.

After graduation, he moved to Maryland, where he joined IBM, starting a long career working largely in Air Traffic Control Management. Bob retired from both IBM and Lockheed Martin. Starting in 1989, he taught at Johns Hopkins University and published numerous papers on computing. In his later years, he also published works on philosophy and a journal of essays.

For many years, he volunteered at Winter Growth, an eldercare facility in Olney, MD, where he wrote and produced short plays for the residents. He was also a volunteer reader for the blind. Throughout his life, he studied philosophy and enjoyed reading and writing poetry as well as attending theater in the DC area.

He is survived by his sister, Susan Britcher, of Williamsburg, Virginia. He leaves behind his partner of over fifty years, Patricia Louise D’Orazio. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.
