Obituary: Ruth Pearson Springer

Ruth Pearson (Lewis, Whiteman) Springer, age 87, of Gettysburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Providence Place Senior Living in Chambersburg, PA.

She was born on March 7, 1938, in West Chester, PA, the daughter of the late Harvey and Carrie Miller Lewis. She was predeceased by her second husband, John W. Springer, to whom she was married for 35 years. She was previously married to Joseph S. Whiteman, who passed away in 2007.

Ruth was a graduate of the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing. Following her move from West Chester to the Gettysburg area, she and her previous husband, Joseph S. Whiteman, owned and operated Granite Hill Campground for several years. After the sale of the campground, she was employed by The Design Place on Lincoln Square in Gettysburg. She later worked for over 20 years at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. Ruth was very active in the community, volunteering with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and Welcome Wagon. She and her husband enjoyed spending time at their home in Gettysburg as well as their home in Ocean City, MD. She also enjoyed playing in her bridge clubs, where she made many long-lasting friendships.

Ruth Springer is survived by her children: Chere High of Jupiter, FL, Stephen Whiteman and his wife Robin of Gettysburg, PA, Lori Sandoe and her husband David of Biglerville, PA and Heather Flannery and her husband Scott of Plano, TX; as well as a stepdaughter, Barbara Shelley and her husband Bob of Thurmont, MD. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Rhiannan High, Arthur High, Chase Whiteman, Shaye Whiteman, Devyn Flannery and Aidan Flannery. She loved her children and grandchildren immensely. She also had many family members in West Chester, PA, and Emmitsburg, MD, who were very special to her. She will be missed.
