Obituary: Susan Rose Hileman

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Susan Rose Hileman, 52, Carroll Valley, PA. She passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at her home.

She was born March 9, 1973, in Hagerstown, MD, the daughter of the late Charles “Sam” Rose and Joyce Weston Rose of Fairfield, PA. In addition to her mother, Susan is survived by her husband Richard L. Hileman II, a brother, Sam Rose, and his wife Aurita of Waynesboro, PA, and a sister, Beth Rose Swankler of Mont Alto, PA, along with various nephews and nieces. Her two cats, Shaggy, whom she lost in February, and Shelby, were her kids. Shelby continues to search the house for her, as do we all.

Mrs. Hileman was a graduate of Fairfield High School and Shippensburg University. She studied abroad in Spain. She taught middle school Spanish in the Frederick County, MD, Public Schools until her retirement in 2006. She was a past President of the Fairfield AMVETS Community Ambulance Service and a former Emergency Medical Technician. She was one of the three members who founded the weekly Bingo at the Fairfield Fire Hall, which proved to be a fantastic fundraiser for the organization.

Susan was a devoted member of a group of life-long friends, and she made new friends wherever she went. Susan’s analytical mind enjoyed finding patterns. She attended weekly Bingo events with a large group of friends that shared the same passion for the game. Nothing was so wonderful as yelling BINGO!

She and her husband have been enthusiastic scuba divers since 2008. Susan loved to photograph the tiny marine creatures she would find and a day on the dive boat beats about any other. Their love for the island and its people resulted in the beginning of a new chapter as they purchased a dive business near their second home in Cozumel, Mexico.

A Memorial service will be held, Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 11:30 AM from Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA, with Pastor Doug Lichty officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. A reception will follow at the Fairfield Fire/EMS Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Iron Springs BIC Church (855 Iron Springs Road, Fairfield, PA 17320) or Forever Love Rescue at the Kitty Corner (39 Queen St., Gettysburg, PA 17325). Online condolences and obituary are available at monahanfuneralhome.com.
