Obituary: Walter Pyle Smith



Walter Pyle Smith, 79, Gettysburg, PA passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Transitions Healthcare, Gettysburg, PA.

He was born October 3, 1944 in Lawrence, Kansas the son of the late Frederick H. and Katherine Pyle Smith. Walter is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jeannette Chaffee Smith.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Wilmington Friends School in the Class of 1962 where he was an outstanding football player. He then graduated from Ursinus College in the Class of 1966 where he also played on the football team. In 1989 he began his career as the regional sales manager for the newly-formed Civil Construction Division of the A.B. Chance Company, distributors of helical piles. In 2000 he joined GeoStructures for 3 years before going with Danbro Company where he became Vice President of Sales. He spent countless hours educating and convincing specifiers and geotechnical engineers that helical piles were a valuable tool in outdoor construction. He retired in 2018.

Walter was a member of Gettysburg United Methodist Church. He and his wife were founding member of the Land Conservancy of Adams County, he was a member of Historic Gettysburg – Adams County and the Gettysburg VFW. He also volunteered with the Salvation Army Bell Ringers at Christmas time.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Smith and Christine Smith

(Ryan Allred); grandsons, Fletcher and James Allred; a stepson, Andrew Chapo (Victoria);

a sister, Katherine Carlozzi; a sister-in-law, Suzanne Smith; two nieces, a nephew, and many

cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Frederick S. Smith.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Gettysburg United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM with Rev. Rick Smith officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. There will be a viewing at Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg on Wednesday, April 3rd from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
