A father and daughter team of occupational therapists are using their hands to help patients at WellSpan Orthopedics in York. Tom Beierschmitt, 45, and Shea Beierschmitt, 20, have been working together to create hand splints for patients.
Tom is a certified hand therapist and has been working for WellSpan for 15 years. He says, “Every year has been dedicated to helping my patients regain not just the function in their hand, but also their independence.” Shea is also an occupational therapist, working at WellSpan Rehabilitation at Bister Street. On her time working at a nursing home, she says, “I have always been hands-on and loved the idea of being a professional caregiver.”

One way the pair has found professional growth together is through mentorship. Tom has been a mentor to Shea throughout her career, and she says, “I am honored to have a father who is so wonderful and respected by many.” They both enjoy being recognized by patients they share, and hearing positive stories about each other.
The Beierschmitt family is close and the pair is literally close as neighbors, living just one house apart. With a shared love of occupational therapy and a dedication to helping others, they are sure to have a bright future ahead of them.
