Old-time base ball this weekend

The largest gathering of 19th-century Base Ball clubs in the country is set to return to Gettysburg this weekend, drawing teams and fans from across the nation for a two-day celebration of America’s pastime—played the way it was in 1864.

The 15th annual Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival takes place July 19–20, transforming the historic town into a living timeline of base ball’s earliest era. Twenty-eight vintage clubs will compete using period-accurate rules, uniforms, and equipment—no gloves, no modern gear, and certainly no million-dollar contracts.

The festival is regarded as the biggest vintage base ball event in the country, attracting both die-hard fans of the sport and curious visitors looking to experience a more gentlemanly version of the game. Players adhere to the customs and terminology of the 19th century, and each match is a tribute to the sport’s origins—when fair play, underhand pitching, and wool uniforms were the standard.

Teams travel from across the United States to take part, recreating a time before radio broadcasts and big-league stadiums. With the backdrop of Gettysburg’s historic fields, the festival offers a uniquely immersive step back in time for spectators and participants alike.

Admission is free, and families are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and enjoy the games throughout the weekend. The event celebrates not only the roots of base ball, but also the spirit of community and camaraderie that defined the sport long before it became a national industry.

First pitches are set for Saturday morning, with games continuing through Sunday afternoon. The event is hosted rain or shine.

Games are played at the Schroeder Farm at 965 Pumping Station Rd, Gettysburg.
