Major General Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania’s Adjutant General and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), has announced his retirement after nearly four decades of service. Schindler, who oversees the Pennsylvania National Guard and DMVA, will step down on October 1, 2024.
Schindler was appointed Pennsylvania’s 54th Adjutant General in 2023. He commanded over 18,000 Army and Air National Guard members and had a budget exceeding $966 million. Under his leadership, the DMVA made significant progress in serving veterans, including breaking ground on a $97 million long-term care facility and securing nearly $1 billion in claims for veterans’ benefits.

Governor Josh Shapiro praised Schindler’s career, saying, “He has led with extraordinary honor and integrity. On behalf of a grateful Commonwealth, I want to thank General Schindler for his service.”
Schindler expressed gratitude for his tenure, stating, “It has been a tremendous honor to serve as Pennsylvania’s Adjutant General,” while acknowledging the support from the administration and the dedication of the soldiers and airmen under his command.
Schindler’s successor will be nominated by Governor Shapiro following his departure.
