The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has passed a bill to legalize recreational marijuana, marking a significant step in a long-running debate over cannabis policy in the state.
The Cannabis Health & Safety Act passed Wednesday afternoon in a 102-101 vote, split strictly along party lines with all Democrats in favor and all Republicans opposed. The legislation cleared a House committee earlier this week under similar partisan divisions.
The measure would legalize marijuana use for adults 21 and older and establish a state-run retail system. Supporters argue it would ensure public health safeguards, restrict youth access, and generate substantial revenue for the Commonwealth.
Despite the victory in the Democrat-controlled House, the bill now moves to the Republican-led Senate, where its future remains uncertain. A similar proposal passed the House last year but failed to gain traction in the upper chamber.
Republican leaders have criticized the legislative process as rushed and raised concerns over the proposed state monopoly on marijuana sales and potential constitutional issues.
Governor Josh Shapiro has endorsed marijuana legalization as part of his broader budget proposal.
