PA. mascots, historic figures will welcome visitors for America250 celebrations

Pennsylvania is turning to a mix of sports mascots, performers, and historic figures to help स्वागत millions of visitors expected for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations this summer.

State tourism officials have launched “Visit PA Playmakers,” a statewide initiative serving as a welcoming “hype squad” for major events tied to America250. The effort brings together recognizable personalities, including the Philadelphia Phillies’ Phillie Phanatic, Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty, and Philadelphia Eagles mascot Swoop, alongside historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross.

Officials say the program is designed to create a more engaging and memorable experience for visitors by showcasing the state’s culture beyond traditional events. The Playmakers will appear at festivals, sporting events, and public gatherings, offering performances, interactive experiences, and opportunities for connection.

The initiative comes as Pennsylvania prepares for a packed 2026 calendar that includes global sporting events and historic commemorations. Among the highlights are the PGA Championship in Newtown Square, the MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia, and matches tied to the FIFA World Cup 2026. Philadelphia will also serve as a focal point for the nation’s Semiquincentennial celebrations from July 1–4.

State leaders expect the influx of visitors to deliver a significant economic boost. Officials project approximately 1.5 million visitors to Philadelphia alone, contributing to an estimated $55 billion in tourism-related spending across Pennsylvania in 2026. That spending is expected to benefit small businesses statewide, including restaurants, hotels, and retail shops.

The Playmakers initiative also extends beyond Philadelphia, with appearances planned in cities such as Pittsburgh, which will host the NFL Draft. Local tourism leaders say the effort is intended to highlight the unique character of communities across the state while creating a cohesive, welcoming atmosphere.

Governor Josh Shapiro has emphasized the importance of investing in public-facing experiences tied to the celebrations, including expanded fan zones and community programming. Officials say these efforts are aimed at ensuring events are accessible, family-friendly and safe.

Organizers also point to large-scale attractions such as Philadelphia’s extended fan festival during the World Cup and a weeklong slate of activities surrounding the MLB All-Star Game as key opportunities to showcase the state on a global stage.
