Penn State will offer environmental science camp

Youth ages 8 to 12 interested in learning how to be “stream doctors” can join Penn State Extension for “Soak up Science: Be a Stream Doctor” camp from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 29-Aug. 1, at Penn State’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim.

The camp will follow the theme of Penn State Extension’s children’s book, Brooke Meets a Stream Doctor, featuring Dr. Watt R. Shedd.

Campers will explore environmental topics, including water resources management and stream health, and will complete a stream study in Dellinger Run. The event will include Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences — learner-centered activities that investigate local environmental issues and lead to informed action — focused on the water cycle and watersheds.

Participants will learn:

— How water moves through the water cycle.
— The area and network of water bodies that constitute a watershed.
— Human land use impacts and community planning.
— Physical, biological and chemical stream parameters.
— What riparian buffers are and their function.
— How to complete an environmental service project.

Registration costs $175 per camper, which includes daily snacks and all activity materials. Participants should bring a nonrefrigerated lunch and a water bottle each day, along with weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, a hat and bug spray, as the group will be outside throughout the camp. Children should wear shoes that can get wet or pack waterproof boots for stream activities.

Additional details will be provided closer to the camp date. Registration is limited to 30 youth registrants on a first-come, first-served basis, with a waitlist available once capacity is reached.

Registration can be paid by credit card or by mailing a check made payable to Penn State University to Samantha Mills, Finance Associate, Attn: Be a Stream Doctor Camp, The Pennsylvania State University, College of Agricultural Sciences Extension Office, 431 Curtain Road, Room 321, University Park, PA 16802.

The registration deadline is July 11. Payment must be received within five business days of registering for registration to be considered complete and the spot to be held. No walk-in registrations will be accepted.
