PennDOT is making it easier for residents to obtain a REAL ID before the upcoming federal deadline. Through May 5, “REAL ID Days” will be held weekly at various centers across Pennsylvania. These special events aim to help residents secure the enhanced identification required for domestic air travel and access to certain federal and military buildings starting May 7.
While a REAL ID is not necessary for driving, voting, or visiting most federal buildings, PennDOT is urging those who plan to fly to upgrade their identification soon. Reports of long lines at DMV offices suggest that demand is increasing as the deadline approaches.
Not all residents will need a REAL ID. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, permanent resident card, or military ID will still be acceptable for air travel and federal access. However, for those relying on a driver’s license for identification, upgrading is essential.
“REAL ID Days” began on February 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each event day. With travel season approaching, PennDOT encourages residents to take advantage of these opportunities before the May 7 deadline.
The Gettysburg Driver License Center, 37 North 4th Street, will have a REAL ID Day on April 14th. Drivers can have their documents verified and imaged and will then receive their REAL ID by mail within 15 business days.
