PennDOT plans Hunterstown-Hampton Bridge replacement project

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is seeking public input on a planned bridge replacement and rehabilitation project along Route 394 (Hunterstown Hampton Road) in Adams County.

The project, located over Conewago Creek in Reading and Straban townships, will replace the existing bridge superstructure, reconstruct beam seats, and install rock scour protection around the abutments and pier. Additional work includes pavement reconstruction on Route 394 and Group Mill Road, guide rail upgrades, and slope protection.

To improve safety, the roadway and bridge will be widened slightly, providing 11-foot travel lanes and 2-foot shoulders for a total curb-to-curb width of 26 feet. Vertical alignment will be adjusted to enhance stopping sight distance, though the horizontal roadway design will remain similar to the existing layout.

The existing bridge, built in 1935, is a two-span steel beam structure supported on stone masonry abutments and pier. It measures 116 feet in length and 24 feet in width. Classified as a Rural Minor Collector, Route 394 currently carries about 1,300 vehicles daily through a mostly wooded area with residential properties nearby.

Construction is expected to take place during the 2027 season. Route 394 will be closed and detoured while the work is underway.

PennDOT has launched an online plans display to introduce the project and gather public feedback. The digital platform includes project documents, bridge plans, and an interactive comment form. Comments will be accepted through September 19, 2025.

The display can be accessed through the PennDOT District 8 website by selecting “Projects Near You” and navigating to the Hunterstown Hampton Road Bridge Superstructure Replacement.

PennDOT notes that project materials can be made available in alternative languages or accessible formats upon request.

For real-time travel conditions, motorists are encouraged to use the 511PA system, available online, by phone, and through a mobile app.
