Today at Presque Isle State Park, Erie County, DCED Secretary Rick Siger emphasized Governor Josh Shapiro’s bipartisan 2024-2025 budget’s commitment to strengthening tourism in Pennsylvania. The budget allocates $15 million to tourism marketing, part of a broader effort to spur economic growth, create jobs, and attract visitors to the state.
“Tourism is a powerful economic engine generating over $76 billion annually and supporting more than 486,000 jobs,” said Secretary Siger. He highlighted how the budget’s increased investment will enhance the visibility of Pennsylvania’s attractions, from state parks to the hospitality industry.

The initiative builds on the Governor’s “Great American Getaway” brand, aiming to draw millions within a few hours’ drive to explore Pennsylvania’s diverse offerings. The state is a prime weekend destination, with proximity to major East Coast cities like New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Nearly 72 million people are within a four-hour drive of Pennsylvania’s rich cultural and natural attractions.
Cindy Adams Dunn, Secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, added, “The budget helps us showcase the outdoor experiences in our parks and forests, supporting local economies that welcome visitors.”
Local leaders praised the budget’s focus on tourism. Senator Dan Laughlin noted the vital role tourism plays in supporting small businesses and preserving natural spaces. Representative Ryan Bizzarro emphasized the importance of state investments in enhancing local communities and attracting new businesses. Representative Robert Merski highlighted Erie’s potential as a premier tourist destination, blending natural beauty with cultural heritage.
The 2024-2025 budget also includes funding for site development, small businesses, and minority-owned enterprises, reflecting a comprehensive strategy to make Pennsylvania more economically competitive.
I only recently learned of the 13.4 mile Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose National Recreation Trail, a freshly-paved rail-trail that loops around the park. Hope to get up there to experience it! (As an old Superman comics fan I’m happy to learn that PA has a Representative Bizzarro.)
