Pennsylvania Implements Bulk Milk Testing for Avian Influenza Prevention

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding has announced that Pennsylvania will require precautionary bulk milk testing for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). This measure aims to prevent the virus’s spread, especially given rising cases in other states. No virus has been detected in Pennsylvania cattle, but the state is acting proactively.

The testing, provided at no cost to farmers, will identify potential infections early. Milk samples will be collected from bulk milk tank trucks and tested at certified labs within 48 hours. If HPAI is detected, investigations will trace the source, and quarantine measures will be enacted. Pasteurization renders milk safe to drink by destroying the virus.

Pennsylvania’s dairy and poultry farms face unique risks due to the close proximity of cattle and birds. HPAI, though rarely fatal in cattle, can severely impact milk production and strain operations. The virus is fatal to poultry, posing a major threat to Pennsylvania’s $132.5 billion agriculture industry.

The state follows other leaders like California and Michigan in implementing mandatory testing. Pennsylvania previously mandated HPAI testing for dairy cattle entering the state.

“This proactive step will protect our farms and workers,” Redding said. Farmers and processors, like Turner Dairy Farms, have supported the initiative to safeguard the industry.

State Veterinarian Dr. Alex Hamberg emphasized the importance of biosecurity, including disinfecting equipment and vehicles, to prevent spread. The Shapiro Administration continues to invest in disease prevention and response, including bolstered veterinary lab services and biosecurity funding.
