Pennsylvania unveils “Let Freedom Ring” license plate ahead of nation’s 250th anniversary

Pennsylvanians can now celebrate the Commonwealth’s historic role in the founding of the United States with a new license plate: “Let Freedom Ring.” Governor Josh Shapiro announced the plate’s availability as part of preparations for the nation’s 250th anniversary, which will be commemorated in 2026.

The new plate honors Pennsylvania as the birthplace of American democracy and is already popular—nearly 11,700 orders have been fulfilled by residents who signed up for early updates last year. The design rollout complements the state’s broader focus on tourism and economic development ahead of major national events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, MLB All-Star Game, and NFL Draft.

Vehicle owners can now request the plate online through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Personalized versions are also available, with instructions and fees varying by plate type. While current standard plates remain valid, the new design is optional and available to all Pennsylvanians. Specialty, military, and organizational plates without legally required designs will be updated to the new look over the coming months.

To promote the launch, Governor Shapiro teamed up with professional sports teams and mascots across Pennsylvania, showing off the new plates in a campaign aimed at building excitement for the approaching milestone.

The “Let Freedom Ring” design is part of the state’s “Pennsylvania: The Great American Getaway” campaign and reflects the Shapiro administration’s emphasis on tourism. According to a 2024 tourism report, visitor activity in Pennsylvania generated $76.7 billion in economic impact and supported nearly 487,000 jobs in 2022.

To help Pennsylvania shine on the national stage in 2026, Shapiro’s proposed 2025–26 budget includes \$64 million in funding to support events and preparations for America’s 250th birthday, including security, promotion, and planning across the state.

Pennsylvanians can order the new plate or learn more at PennDOT’s website.
