Photo Gallery: Buchanan Valley Picnic Celebrates 139 Years of Tradition

Every fourth Sunday in August, Saint Ignatius Church welcomes the community for its cherished annual picnic, held rain or shine from noon to 7:00 p.m. This year’s gathering on Saturday enjoyed beautiful weather, thanks—many say—to the prayers of Father Howard and the Saint Ignatius parish. The rain, luckily, waited until overnight.

Set against the peaceful backdrop of the church grounds at 1095 Church Road in Orrtanna, the picnic once again offered the home-style cooking and warm fellowship it has become known for. Guests feasted on family-style ham and chicken dinners with fresh corn, mashed potatoes, and classic summer sides. Homemade pies and cakes provided the perfect finish, while the outdoor stands served ham salad sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, sauerkraut, chicken corn soup, root beer floats, and peach sundaes.

Entertainment filled the day with Bingo, games like the fruit wheel and ring toss, and live music from Willy’s and the Pickers. “We had the traditional things that folks look forward to,” said organizer Mark Schur. “We thank everyone who attended as well as the volunteers who spent many hours making it possible.”

For 139 years, the picnic has been more than just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of community, friendship, and the changing seasons. Be sure to mark your calendar for the milestone 140th picnic, set for August 22, 2026!
