With the spring season fast approaching, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is urging residents to be mindful of the increased risk of wildfires.
According to a release from the DCNR, 99% of wildfires in Pennsylvania are caused by people. The greatest danger of wildfires occurs during the spring months of March, April, and May, as well as the autumn months of October and November, when dry conditions, low humidity, and windy weather combine to create conditions ripe for wildfires to spread out of control.

The DCNR is encouraging residents to practice fire safety by taking precautions such as ensuring that campfires, fireworks, and backyard burning are only done with a rake or shovel accompanied by a bucket of water and never leaving a fire unattended.
Residents should also check the DCNR’s website for current fire risks and avoid outdoor fires on days when there is a Red Flag Warning. If lighting a fire is necessary, it is best to do so early in the morning or at night.
Finally, the DCNR reminds residents to remove leaves and other debris from around homes and cabins, and to stack firewood away from structures in order to prevent embers from catching.
By following these simple steps, residents can help protect themselves and their communities from the devastating effects of wildfires.
