The United Way of Adams County invites supporters to bid for a good cause at its annual purse auction.
The organization’s 16th Annual Women’s Purse Auction returns to an in-person event Thursday, March 2 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Wyndham, Gettysburg. “Run for the Purses” will take on a Kentucky Derby theme so attendees are encouraged to wear big hats and bid high.
“I am very excited to attend my first in-person purse auction,” United Way of Adams County Executive Director Laura McMahon, who has led the organization since 2020, said. “I was so impressed with how strongly our community supported United Way when we were forced to hold virtual auctions. Our organization has a small staff so dedicated volunteers taking the lead on this event is also greatly appreciated.”
The purse auction features raffles, games, a silent auction, and a live auction. The live auction begins at 7 p.m. The United Way has plenty of donated purses, McMahon said, but needs gift cards from local businesses.
Purses auction for a cause
“Run for the Purses” benefits the Adams County Children and Youth Services’ Independent Living Program and United Way’s Ready to Learn Program.
The Independent Living Program supports young women and men as they age out of foster care. The goal is to help youth overcome significant challenges facing them as they transition to self-sufficiency.
The United Way of Adams County’s Ready to Learn program is a collaborative countywide effort that promotes high-quality early learning. Ready to Learn Coordinator Diana Fasnacht works with all local school districts and early childhood education providers.
