“Question, Persuade, and Refer” Training Sessions Available Online for All Residents

Local Pennsylvania residents who would like to help with mental health awareness programs this summer can now register for QPR sessions, held by Wellspan Philhaven and Healthy Adams County.

QPR, or “Question, Persuade, and Refer,” is a nationally certified program run by professional trainers. In the course, up to 10 individuals are trained through Zoom on how to become “gatekeepers,” or someone that can recognize a crisis as well as the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.

Gatekeepers can include anyone in the community. Parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters and many others are able to be trained and ready to recognize and refer someone at risk of attempting suicide.

There are two sessions held during June. While Monday, June 8th at 9 a.m.-12 p.m. was a single QPR session, Monday, June 22 will be held from 12-4 p.m. to add an extra hour for Mental Health Awareness, or MHA. The additional hour adds an overview of the more common mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorder.

There are also two sessions held during July. Wednesday, July 8th will be a QPR session with MHA, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23rd will be a single QPR session from 1-4 p.m.
